Sir Wilfrid Laurier The first French Canadian to become prime minister of Canada was Wilfrid Laurier. Although French was his native tongue, he became a master of the English language. This and his picturesque personality made him popular throughout Canada, and he led the young country in a 15-year period of great development. Wilfrid Laurier was born in St-Lin, Quebec, and studied law at McGill University. After three years in the Quebec legislature, he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1874. There he rose rapidly to leadership. Although he was a French Canadian and a Roman Catholic, he was chosen leader of the Liberal party in 1887. Nine years later he became prime minister. He was knighted in 1897. "Build up Canada" were the watchwords of Laurier's government. Laurier was loyal to Great Britain, sent Canadian volunteers to help in the Boer War, established a tariff favorable to British goods, and worked to strengthen the ties between the two countries. But he saw the British Empire as a worldwide alliance of free and equal nations, and he opposed every attempt to limit Canada's freedom. Laurier's liberal immigration policy brought hundreds of thousands of settlers to the western provinces. He reduced postal rates, promoted the building of railroads needed for national expansion, and appointed a commission to regulate railroad rates. After 15 years in office his government was defeated, presumably on the issue of reciprocal trade with the United States. Laurier believed, however, that his political defeat was caused primarily by opponents in Ontario who considered him too partial to Roman Catholic interests in Quebec. Prior to World War I, Laurier tried forcefully to support the formation of a Canadian navy. His own Liberal party defeated this measure, however, and Canada entered the war without a fleet of its own. During the early years of World War I, Laurier supported the war policy of Sir Robert Borden's Conservative government. In 1917 he refused to join a coalition government that was formed to uphold conscription. Laurier felt that he could not back a measure so unpopular in the province of Quebec. Wilfrid Laurier's regime lasted 15 years. It was one of renewed growth and prosperity. The Manitoba School Question was promptly hushed up by new legislation enacted by the province in accordance with a compromise worked out with Ottawa. To his Cabinet Laurier drew some of the most capable leaders from every part of Canada. This idea of independence is a good one, however it is far oversimplified. In order to open a school money is needed to buy property, build the school, and get supplies. On top of that, employees and teachers are very necessary. None of this is impossible, but it is very difficult to accomplish, and makes this idea less convenient. Next, in a speech by King titled Our God is Marching On, King stated Let us march on segregated schools until every vestige of segregation and inferior education becomes a thing of the past and Negroes and whites study side by side in the socially healing context of the classroom(Doc D). King explained that side by side, eventually blacks and whites would forget their differences and learn to work together. Lastly, in a speech made by King titled The Purpose of Education, King explained the purpose and benefits of school. Towards the end when he summed it up by saying, The broad education will, therefore, transmit to one not only the accumulated knowledge of the race but also the accumulated experience of social living(The Purpose of Education). Here, King explained that integrated schooling not only gives the knowledge to all, but also that people will learn to work with somebody who may seem different than them. Overall, Martin Luther King had the better idea about education because he wanted blacks and whites in the same schools. If this happened, blacks and whites would forget their differences and have no choice but to accept each other. Malcolm Xs idea was fairly good, but the execution of it was far too difficult, and King was bringing the blacks to where the resources already were. Secondly, Malcolm X had the better ideas on working together or separately in order to achieve civil rights because the dependance on whites hadnt worked in years, and it was a great time for blacks to start working on their own. In Kings famous I have a Dream speech, King explained his own dreams for the nation. He said, With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to climb up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day(Doc B). While this idea on togetherness seems like it can please everyone, it cannot. Blacks had been trying to cooperate with whites for years prior to this, and all they received back was hate and disrespect. If blacks had been successful in getting these jobs then it would not have even been a topic. That is not the case though, and thats why Malcolm X made more sense in this way. In Malcolm Xs autobiography, he stated We will meanwhile be working among our own kind, in our own bla ck communities showing and teaching black men in ways that only other black men can that the black man has got to help himself. Working separately, the sincere white people and sincere black people actually will be working together(Doc C). Malcolm basically stated that instead of trying to go get a job or work with the white folks, go get a job in your own black communities, and in that way whites and blacks would actually be working together. Finally, in an audio excerpt from Malcolm X, he explained the difference between separation and segregation. He stated In the white community, the white man controls the economy, his own economy, his own politics, his own everything. Thats his community. But at the same time while the Negro lives in a separate community, its a segregated community. Which means its regulated from the outside by outsiders. The white man has all of the businesses in the Negro community. He runs the politics of the Negro community. He controls all the civic orga nizations in the Negro community. This is a segregated community(The Race Problem). Malcolm X simply said that whites controlled their own communities as well the blacks, and this is why blacks need to move onto their own businesses in their own workplaces. All in all, Martin Luther Kings idea on equality in the workplace had failed over and over in the past, and Malcolm Xs theory would have been quicker and better for blacks in the long run. Finally, even though Kings peaceful protest seemed to be the simple and safe choice to make, Malcolm Xs strong belief in not backing down from racial threats and doing it yourself made more sense because peoples lives were put to harm far too often. Whether it was from not having a fair wage to provide for your family, or being threatened by whites, blacks had to be more independent. To begin with, Martin Luther Kings philosophy of peaceful protest seemed to be the best and most popular option, but even though it worked in the past in other countries, blacks had no time to waste. In a book titled Stride Toward Freedom, written by Martin Luther King Jr., he gave his philosophy on the civil rights movement. He said Bomb our homes and threaten our children; send your hooded perpetrators of violence into our communities and drag us out on some wayside road, beating us and leaving us half dead, and we will still love you(Doc H). King simply said that no matter what happened to the blacks and their families, they will still love the whites. In an interview in The Young Socialist in which Malcolm gave his views on peace, he stated, The only people in this country who are asked to be nonviolent are black people. Ive never heard anybody go to the Klu Klux Klan and teach them nonviolence ¦ Nonviolence is only preached to black Americans and I dont go along with anyone who wants to teach our people nonviolence until someone at the same time is teaching our enemy to be nonviolent(Doc K). Malcolm simply said that blacks shouldnt have to stand down if whites do not have to either. Lastly, in the year 1963, Malcolm X gave an extremely powerful speech at a rally in Detroit. In this speech Message to the Grassroots, Malcolm mentioned his thoughts on peace and fighting back. He stated Its like when you go to the dentist, and the mans going to take your tooth. Youre going to fight him when he starts pulling. So he squirts some stuff in your jaw called novocaine, to make you t hink theyre not doing anything to you. So you sit there and cause youve got all of that novocaine in your jaw, you suffer peacefully. Blood running all down your jaw, and you dont know whats happening. Cause someone has taught you to suffer peacefully(Message to the Grassroots). Malcolm basically said that blacks learned to suffer and doing nothing about it, because they dont know any different. This is all extremely important because it shows how Malcolms ideas wanted blacks to stand up against racial threats and attitudes. King said that no matter what harm whites will do, they will still love them. This is very peaceful and requires courage, but it put peoples lives in danger and gave the impression that blacks were ok with that. Meanwhile Malcolm never threatened anyone, instead he decided not to just accept the threats. In conclusion, if it were not for Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, the United States would not look like it does today. They did so much inspiring and lecturing, that will be left in the minds of the people for generations to come. However, there is still some unfinished business left in the country. Blacks still deal with discrimination and racism throughout our country, but it is on a much smaller scale than it used to be. This would likely make King and Malcolm X proud, but not satisfied. If either were alive, it is likely theyd continue to spread their ideas and fight for equal rights and treatment for all.

Many people question why scientists cannot simply use adult stem cells for their research instead of using embryonic stem cells. There are, however, some inevitable truths that we can find through research done on embryonic stem cells.Further advancing embryonic stem cell research will benefit humankind by providing crucial information on the beginning stages of life, allow scientists to watch how diseases that thousands of Americans suffer from yearly evolve and help find potential cures, and replace damaged tissues caused from unfortunate physical injuries. Some may argue that taking the life of an embryo is murder, as that embryo should have the same rights as those of an adult. It is argued, â€Å"Embryos should be protected because they are ‘that which we all once were’† (Clemmit 701).Many anti-abortion activists fear that advances in stem cell research will cause more women to look to abortion in order to receive compensation for their fetus. This argument goes as far to say that some women may intentionally conceive to receive money, therefore causing a â€Å"multimillion-dollar fetal harvesting industry† (Jost 1). What these activists fail to see is that â€Å"there is a significant difference between an embryo suspended in liquid nitrogen that will never be implanted inside a womb, and an unborn child who is already in the womb† (Bettelheim 1071).These cells will not go through the developmental stages required to grow into a fetus. Embryos are composed of the most basic part of life, simple cells that will eventually develop into much more complex tissues. At this stage, they are a cluster of about 150 cells called a blastocyt (Clemmit 699). Scientists will be able to research these blastocyts at their most simple stage of production, before each cell begins its amazing transformation into bone, blood, hair, brain, etc tissues. Being able to research this process, scientists will be able to discover more about what occurs inside the womb during the initial stages of growth.With the amount of birth defects in children born today, this information will prove to be highly beneficial. Today, â€Å"3 out of every 100 babies born in the United States have some kind of major birth defect† (Nicholson 1). These defects are sometimes hereditary; however, sometimes the reasons they occur are unknown. Scientists may be able to pinpoint precisely when these mutations occur in the tissue that cause defects such as tay sachs disease, down syndrome, and many others. The simple use of embryonic stem cells may greatly improve the quality of life for these unlucky newborn babies. Studying stem cells â€Å"offers a glimpse at human life in its simplest form†¦before they develop rudimentary nervous systems and are capable of achieving something resembling awareness† (Bettelheim 1067). The possible use of gene therapy to fix the chemical imbalances in our DNA that cause genetic disorders and some types of behaviors may be one of the greatest outcomes of continued and more aggressive research of embryonic stem cells. The evolution of many diseases that our population faces today may also be further understood by stem cell research.Scientists will be able to see a â€Å"’disease in a dish’, where degenerating cells themselves could be observed and treatments tested as a condition†¦develops† (Clemmit 700). For scientists, being about to observe the degeneration of cells into the said disease may help answer several questions as to why they occur. If scientists are able to watch this disease in the making, they may be able to learn more about what goes wrong to cause the degenerating of cells; therefore allowing them to more effectively produce potential cures. This is true for several other diseases that similarly have no known cause or cure. The amazing ability to test potential cures on those diseases without using humans for clinical trials will also prove to be highly beneficial. Embryonic stem cells will allow scientists, â€Å"to explore stem cell cultures of cells that bear the genetic stamp of certain diseases†¦to test potential new treatments† (Clemmit 708).These pre-disposed cells will give researchers a large sample group of the disease in question and allow them to test many potential cures at the same time, being able to see the effects of multiple possibilities in comparison with one another. Being a perfectly healthy jockey one day, his tragic fall from his horse left him a paraplegic and stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. These types of injuries will benefit greatly from embryonic stem cells. As previously stated, embryonic stem cells are able to replicate endlessly and have been proven to be able to grow into any type of body part (Bettelheim 1067).There is still work to be done on these cells in order to cause them to â€Å"commit† into growing into a specific type of organ; however, with the proper funding for research, these cells will be able to replace damaged or destroyed cells in the body. Presently, scientists â€Å"have watched with amazement as some of the cells spontaneously evolve into tiny bundles of beating heart muscle, clumps of nerves, or even hair and teeth† (Bettelheim, 1067). These discoveries have been made even with the little a mount of research that has been able to be performed over the past 20 years. The extent to how much more these cells will be able to do for our bodies seem limitless from what has been discovered about them already. One of the greatest benefits of human stem cells is their acceptance from our bodies and immune systems. These cells are not rejected as they are able to take on the DNA of the recipient. Ideally, scientists will be able to take cells from the recipient and combine them with donor eggs, creating beginning stage embryos (Bettelheim 1073). By doing this, the recipient of the stem cells will have a perfect match to their own DNA, making rejection impossible for the body.Allowing these cells to combine and grow, scientists will be able to replace the broken parts of the body with newer and healthier parts. The rejection of the donor organ is the main cause of failure for present day organ transplants. As we have seen, these transplants have saved many lives that can be saved by simple embryonic stem cells being produced into perfectly matched organs and tissues. With the ability of embryonic stem cells to replace and regenerate damaged or dead cells, the quality of life will be greatly improved for many people suffering from ailments due to physical injuries.The answer to the question of human life or curing disease is clear. With breakthroughs in research on embryonic stem cells we can have both. It was stated at a NIH hearing that â€Å"a civilized society will appreciate the possibilities opened up by research, but will insist that scientific progress must not come at the expense of human dignity† (Bettelheim 1068). This statement clearly shows that we must not compromise ourselves in order to further advance science.The embryonic stem cells currently being used to do research are either donated tissues form women who choose to abort their pregnancies or still born babi es, or come from fertilization clinics where the embryos are donated by the couples who created them since they will no longer be used. The research on embryonic stem cells is not compromising our morale since the sources of this research would otherwise be discarded as waste. Answer: The world around us is a beautiful amalgamation of the various diverse architectural designs as well as patterns which is seldom noticed by the inhabitants of this world (Griffith, 2015). Emily Dickinson is one of the rare few literary geniuses who sought to portray this beauty in her poetical works (Homans, 2014). It is noticed that all her major literary works use various symbolisms as well as metaphors from the world of art and the world around her (Griffith, 2015). People generally choose to see the ugliness as well as mundane realties of the present world and therefore they focus on such issues in their works. However, the works of Dickinson are redolent with the beauties of her native America (Homans, 2014). In her poem Because I could not stop for Death, Emily Dickinson uses the natural surroundings of her native America to portray the theme of death and the journey from this life to the afterlife (Griffith, 2015). In this poem, Death is present as a chivalrous gentleman who takes his lady on a chariot ride around the natural surroundings (Homans, 2014). It is to be noted that since the traditional times death has been presented as a counterpart of sleep and life itself is given the attribute of a dream, as found in the famous lines of William Shakespeare from the play Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, To die, to sleep - To sleep, perchance to dream - ay, there's the rub, For in this sleep of death what dreams may come... It is to be noted that in the first stanza, the speaker tells us about her merry journey with the gentleman in the past tense, hinting that it had probably happened yesterday only (Griffith, 2015). However, at the end of the poem the readers find out that the journey had actually happened a long time back probably hundreds of year back, at the same time realizing that she is heading towards Eternity (Griffith, 2015). The tone of the first stanza suggests that death had not taken the speaker by surprise on the contrary she has been waiting for death for a long time now which is suggested by the lines Because I could not stop for Death ("Because I could not stop for Death (479) by Emily Dickinson", 2018). Therefore, when it appears before her in the guise of a chivalrous gentleman or her prince charming she is not at all surprised. It is interesting to note that contrary to the way death has been portrayed as a gruesome thing by the other literary artists of her day, she decides to paint death as a charming young who has appeared before her to take her on a merry ride. Dickinson might be having Dantes The Divina Commedia at the back of her mind when she wrote this particular poem as there is a clear resemblance between Dante standing on the door of Hell and the lady mentioned in the poem Because I could not stop for Death (Griffith, 2015). Another interesting thing to note about the opening stanza of the poem is that the poet has presented death as a journey from this world to the world of eternity and also she dwells on immortality (Griffith, 2015). This is in direct contradiction to the standard opinion of people who consider death as an end in itself. For the poet, Emily Dickinson, death is a merry ride around her American hometown with a charming young gentleman in an open carriage (Homans, 2014). Another a spect to be noted is that contrary to the traditional Christian belief which ascribes gruesomeness with the concept of death, here she ascribes the attribute of kindness to death which is clearly outlined by the line, He kindly stopped for me ("Because I could not stop for Death (479) by Emily Dickinson", 2018). This particular line is also important in another sense. It provides us with the gender roles of the society of Dickinsons time. The act of attributing masculine gender to death is a clear indication that in her times all the important powerful positions were held by men (Homans, 2014). According to Issac Asimov, Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome. However, in this particular poem by Emily Dickinson, it is found that the transition from this world to the next world is actually very smooth as well as enjoyable for the narrator of the poem. There are poets like Dylan Thomas, who had advised not to go gentle into the unknown land of de ath in lines like Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. However, in the poem under discussion here it is found that the lady is about to make the journey from this world to the world of eternity as if she were going on a merry ride in a carriage with a young suitor (Griffith, 2015). Therefore, from the above discussion it becomes clear that the poems of Emily Dickinson are a beautiful amalgamation of the natural beauties which she found in the native land of America and certain mystical elements which she was able to attain by virtue of her upbringing and also by her close association with the Pre-Raphaelite Movement. The poem Because I count not stop for Death makes use of the natural surroundings and the symbolisms derived from the various literary texts and common perceptions to portray Dickinsons idea of death.
